  • (Bonus Room) A room with no specifically designated function, unlike a living room, bedroom, or kitchen. Is not included in the initial square footage.

  • (Bonus room) Homes sometimes have a room that may not have a closet and/or window, so it can't technically be classified as a bedroom. It could be used as one or have a number of other uses, however.

Palais de l'Élysée (Élysée Palace), Paris, France

Palais de l'Élysée (Élysée Palace), Paris, France

The Elysee Palace (Palais de l'Elysee) is the official residence of the President of the French Republic, containing his office, and is where the Council of Ministers meets. It is located near the Champs-Elysees in Paris.
The Elysee has gardens, in which the president hosts a party on the afternoon of Bastille Day.

The architect Armand-Claude Mollet possessed a property fronting on the road to the village of Roule, west of Paris (now the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore), and backing onto royal property, the Grand Cours through the Champs-Elysees. He sold this in 1718 to Louis Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, comte d'Evreux (families: ducs and princes de Bouillon et Sedan: de la Marck | von der Marck), with the agreement that Mollet would construct an hotel particulier for the count, fronted by an entrance court and backed by a garden. The Hotel d'Evreux was finished and decorated by 1722, and though it has undergone many modifications since, it remains a fine example of the French classical style. At the time of his death in 1753, Evreux was the owner of one of the most widely admired houses in Paris, and it was bought by King Louis XV as a residence for the Marquise de Pompadour, his mistress. Opponents showed their distaste for the regime by hanging signs on the gates that read: "Home of the King's whore". After her death, it reverted to the crown.
In 1773, it was purchased by Nicolas Beaujon, banker to the Court and one of the richest men in France, who needed a suitably sumptuous "country house" (for the city of Paris did not yet extend this far) to house his fabulous collection of great masters paintings. To this end, he hired the architect Etienne-Louis Boullee to make substantial alterations to the buildings (as well as design an English-style garden). Soon on display there were such well-known masterpieces as Holbein's The Ambassadors (now in the National Gallery in London), and Frans Hals' Bohemian (now at the Louvre). His architectural alterations and art galleries gave this residence international renown as "one of the premier houses of Paris".
The palace and gardens were purchased from Beaujon by Bathilde, duchesse de Bourbon in 1787 for 1,300,000 livres. It was the Duchess who named it the Elysee. She also built a group of cottages in the gardens which she named the Hameau de Chantilly, after the Hameau at her Chateau de Chantilly. With the French Revolution, the Duchess fled the country and the Elysee was confiscated. It was leased out. The gardens were used for eating, drinking, and dancing, under the name Hameau de Chantilly; and the rooms became gambling houses.
In 1803, the Elysee was sold to Joachim Murat, and in 1808, to the Emperor, and it became known as the Elysee-Napoleon. After the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon returned to the Elysee, signed his abdication there on 22 June 1815, and left the Elysee on the 25th.
Russian Cossacks camped at the Elysee when they occupied Paris in 1814.
Though it was first officially used by the government of Napoleon Bonaparte, the Hotel d'Evreux was formally purchased for Louis XVIII in 1816. Under the provisional government of the Second Republic, it took the name of the Elysee National and was designated the official residence of the President of the Republic. (The President also has the use of several other official residences, including the Chateau de Rambouillet, forty five kilometres southwest of Paris, and the Fort de Bregancon near Marseille.)

In 1853, following his coup d'etat that ended the Second Republic, Napoleon III charged the architect Joseph-Eugene Lacroix with renovations; meanwhile he moved to the nearby Tuileries Palace, but kept the Elysee as a discreet place to meet his mistresses, moving between the two palaces through a secret underground passage that has since been demolished. Since Lacroix completed his work in 1867, the essential look of the Palais de l'Elysee has remained the same.
In 1873, during the Third Republic, The Elysee became the official presidential residence.
In 1917, an orangutan escaped from a nearby menagerie, entered the palace and was said to have tried to haul the wife of President Raymond Poincare into a tree only to be foiled by Elysee guards. President Paul Deschanel, who resigned in 1920 because of mental illness, was said to have been so impressed by the orangutan's feat that, to the alarm of his guests, he took to jumping into trees during state receptions.

The Elysee Palace was closed in June 1940, and remained empty during World War II. It was reoccupied only in 1946 by Vincent Auriol, President of the Provisional Government, then first President of the Fourth Republic from 1947 to 1954.
Between 1959 and 1969, the Elysee was occupied by Charles de Gaulle, the first President of the Fifth Republic. De Gaulle did not like its lack of privacy, and oversaw the purchase of the luxurious Hotel de Marigny to lodge foreign State officials in visit to France, saying, "I do not l

egg ornaments.

egg ornaments.

I got these eggs out of a house back in 2003. Here's the original blog post from June 28th, 2003, talking about the house these came from:

The most hilarious thing to ever happen to me occured yesterday.

Adam's dad, as I may have mentioned, is a private detective. He also does other things aside from watch people--such as, watch houses. He was hired to watch a house on the north side. An 86-year-old woman had lived there up until her death. She left no heirs, and the bank doesn't want anyone tampering with it while it's being sold. She deemed all of her valuables to be auctioned off and her house sold, the proceeds going to a cat charity.

Before it could even be considered sellable, they had to clean it out. Apparently, this woman was a total packrat--she merely had tunnels to walk through her house because stuff was piled up so high. The bank sent someone through earlier this week to weed out any valuables they could auction off. They left behind everything else that wasn't really worth too much to them.

So, Adam's dad was given the keys to check in on the house--and permission that if he sees anything in the house that he wants, he can simply take it. The bank is through with it, and they're sending a cleanup guy through to literally sweep everything into a pile and haul it all out to a dumpster.

Adam and I *jumped* at this chance to explore someone's house and dig through old stuff. He wasn't really into this until he met me, but now he's caught the bug. We went through the house on Thursday evening with his dad to simply scope it out. There was a first floor, an attic, and a basement. I thought the woman had been dead some time, but she apparently just lived that way--the kitchen was pretty gross, and she had a major mouse infestation. Every surface was covered with mouse droppings. I think the sense of adventure toned down the gross factor, because it never even phased me.

We vowed to go back Friday and clean out the house of everything we wanted. Adam and I went there early Friday morning with my parent's big van--I actually drove it on the expressway, which was pretty interesting. Nothing bad happened. We sorted through a bunch of cool stuff in the attic. Adam's dad was out for money... he said to pick up anything you could sell on EBay and then take whatever we wanted. Well, I wanted everything! When I see something interesting that's old and unique, I want it for myself. Why would I want to make some huge profit?

I found an old box full of old medicine bottles with hand-made labels like "Dose-1 teaspoon" and a bunch of old makeup from the 30s and 40s that still had stuff inside. Beauty cream called "chatterbox", old lipsticks, everything. I got a whole stack of Life magazines from '46-'48 in mint condition. Those are things I want to *keep*. Adam found tampons that were REALLY old, which I found interesting and decided to keep also. When I was going through a drawer, I found these itsy bitsy cardboard boxes... I couldn't think of what they were. They said "prophylactics" but it just wasn't clicking. So I say to Adam, "What's a prohylactic?" and he goes "Rachel. It's a condom."

I tossed the box away from me instantly and started laughing. They were really old condoms, probably from the 60s. I took a little box that was still shrink-wrapped. They were little individual cardboard boxes with three condoms apiece, and the package said "meant only to prevent disease". Lovely. Anyway... so the basic theme is, if it's everyday interesting, I enjoy it. Adam and I went to an antiques mall on Monday, and I commented that when I have my own house, I want it to be like stepping back in time--a functioning museum that you can actually touch. After all of my finds yesterday, I said we should have a special half bath set aside with all the "correct" things in it from the period, including the tampons and the condoms. :o)

On to the funniest, most embarassing moment of my life (thus far). Adam and I were on the back porch. There was a cute tiny dresser covered with some pieces of countertop. We decided we liked the dresser, so we took all the pieces of countertop off of it. I decided I would be the one to empty out the drawers. At one point the drawers were filled with pieces of paper but are now shredded to confetti by miscellaneous rodents. I was just dumping out the paper onto the ground.

The first drawer went okay. The second drawer was the doozy. Adam was standing right behind me as I tipped the drawer and shook out the paper. The next thing we knew, we were listening to the most horrible sound. Kind of like a cat meowing, but in horrible, utter pain, and a moan... it was just disgusting. It freaked me out, so I simply dropped the drawer. My plan was to then turn and leave the room, quickly, and head to the front of the house.

Adam had other plans.

He took off running with the most comically terrifed expression I ha

Who's that pretty girl?

Who's that pretty girl?

This is the first self-portriat I've felt comfortable posting... Taken with my Nikon D60

and here's 10 random things you don't know about me!

1. I’m an aerospace engineer, but I always wanted to be a ballerina :)
2. I grew up at military air shows, they are my earliest memories
3. I’ve lived in a few different locations (Iowa, Cali, Colorado, Florida) since graduating from high school and I’m still not sure where I want to be. I really miss my family back in St. Louis, but I know that’s not where I belong. Maybe I’ll give North Carolina a try?
4. I love 70s punk music
5. I turn 26 in two weeks and it turns out I have no idea what to do with my life :)
6. I’ve recently come to love (watching) sports. I follow Syracuse basketball, and Pittsburgh football and hockey. Don’t follow baseball much, but I’ll always cheer for the Cards back home. Hockey is definitely my favorite (Let’s go Pens!)
7. If you couldn’t tell, I also love cars (and motorcycles), I’m totally obsessed with my new WRX
8. I love maps and I want to travel across the world
9. I also love to bake, especially cupcakes and I can do some basic cake decorating
10. People really have to convince me to spend money on myself, I must have inherited my dad’s theory to use things until they can’t fixed anymore :)

We're very excited to have a place to showcase our food photography now.
